LOESS Wines

LOESS Wijnen was born… After almost 20 years of walking through the vineyards of Ribera del Duero and Rueda, Jaime Saez de La Hoya, a local wine expert, bought six beautiful vineyards in 2001. And so LOESS was born, specially selected with his expertise.

Own vineyards

The first LOESS wines took their name from a type of sedimentary soil and were made during the 2003 harvest. All from Jaime Saez de La Hoya’s own vineyards. And then he began the search for vineyards in neighboring Rueda. Bored of the standard mass-market Rueda that had been producing in the last decade since its meteoric rise to fame, Jaime wanted to produce the best Rueda possible. Taking full advantage of incredible, century-old vines. With the help of winemaker Issac Fernandez, LOESS looks set to push the benchmark even further. As they continue to search for perfection in two of Spain’s most exciting wine regions.

LOESS Wines

The acquisition of the best soils of the region in the municipality of Roa (Burgos) began, eventually acquiring six vineyards. Later, this was expanded with a project for white wines from Rueda. Loess stands for sedimentary soil. Such soils are fertile, deep and are ideal for growing vines. Loess is therefore a wine named after a soil, and it is much more a terroir wine.

The Loess Ribera del Duero wines are “made” on the estates opposite -Vega Sicilia on the so-called “Golden Mile” The unique soil-grape-climate combination enables the team to produce unique premium wines. The development in the vineyard is a process that is closely monitored. The needs of each vine are determined to work towards a balanced ripeness of the grape, the basis for the quality wines of Loess.

Rueda

Rueda received DO recognition in 1980. The Rueda wine region is located 165 km northwest of Madrid, in the heart of Castilla y Leon on the banks of the Duero (called Douro in Portugal) which flows into the sea at Porto. The finest Rueda wines are made from 100% Verdejo. The Rueda wine region is relatively flat. The soil of the Rueda wine region is rich in iron and is usually loose, crumbly, well-drained and easy to work. Rueda has a continental climate. And precipitation is therefore the determining factor for the quality of the wines. It usually rains in spring and autumn, with the occasional year in which it only rains sporadically.

Ribera del Duero

The Ribera del Duero wine region is located northwest of Madrid on the Duero River (called Douro in Portugal) which flows into the sea at Porto. Ribera del Duero wine was already produced in the 9th century. The area is 700-850 meters above sea level. It freezes in the winter and sometimes even in the spring. In the summer, temperatures can rise to 40º C, with significant drops in temperature often occurring at night. Due to these weather conditions, the growing season is relatively short. Despite its location in the Spanish interior, the climate is a mix of continental and temperate-Mediterranean: usually warm and dry with modest rainfall and hot, dry summers. Thanks to the altitude, even in the middle of summer, the night temperature is low, which is beneficial for the development of the grapes.
